EIC Honorary Members
The first Honorary Members were elected to the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers (former name of the Engineering Institite of Canada) in 1889. Until 1973, the roll of Honorary Members included members of the Royal Family, Governors General of Canada, politicians, business leaders, Past Presidents of the Institute, and other distinguished Canadian engineers and scientists.
Since 1975 however, the title of Honorary Member is bestowed to individuals who are not members of its Constitutent Societies but who have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to engineering and the profession of engineering in Canada. Some of these individuals are engineers, some are not. On the occasion of its 125th anniversary in 2012, the Institute exceptionally elected to recognize five outstanding feats of Canadian engineering. The list that follows includes all Honorary Members elected since 1960.
