Dr. Keith Hipel - nominated by the IEEE Canada

Keith Hipel obtained his Bachelor’s and Doctorate degrees in Civil Engineering as well as his Master’s degree in Systems Design from the University of Waterloo. He continued his career with this university where he is now Professor of Systems Design Engineering and Coordinator of the Conflict Analysis Group. His major research interests are in conflict resolution, time series analysis, and decision making under uncertainty from a systems engineering perspective. These interests are focused on water resources management, hydrology, environmental engineering and sustainable development.

Dr. Hipel has also worked extensively overseas in carrying out joint research with foreign colleagues a nd students in Japan, China, France, Israel, and elsewhere, where he thoroughly enjoys both teaching and research. He is the Canadian Founder and Director of exchange programs with Torrori and Kyoto Universities in Japan, in which more than 150 students from both countries have now participated.

He has held a Canada Council Killam Research fellowship and is the recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award, and the Award for Excellence in Research for the University of Waterloo

Professor Hipel is a man with diverse interests that include teaching, research and consulting activities with groups such as the International Joint Commission, Environment Canada, the US Air Force and a number of Electrical Unities in Canada, Brazil and the US.

He is currently the author of four books, nine additional edited books, and more than 350 invited articles, papers and technical reports,. And if this does not keep this talented engineer occupied, his teaching reaches throughout the undergraduate and graduate levels. Currently 16 PhD and 37 Masters students have completed their degrees under his supervision and he has supervised many students carrying out undergraduate design projectsHe is currently the author of four books, nine additional edited books,
