EIC / ICI FELLOWS  (2004)

Mr. Anthony H. Tawil
 -
A Member of the Canadian Geotechnical Society

Mr. Tawil graduated from the University of London with a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, and then obtained a D.I.C. in Soil Mechanics from Imperial College of Science and Technology.  He was subsequently awarded a Masters degree in Geotechnical and Highway Engineering at Queen’s University.  He then joined the firm of Acres International where he is currently Chief Geotechnical Engineer, and also acts as an independent consultant.

Mr. Tawil’s career has included a wide variety of projects in the civil engineering field.  As a manager he has been responsible for the collective work of groups of specialists in soil and rock mechanics, geology and hydrogeology, for their work on large industrial, waste management, and water resource projects.  It is in this latter area, water resources, where Mr. Tawil has become known as one of Canada’s top experts - - that is the design and construction of dams, especially earth and rockfill dams.  As a result he has developed a worldwide engineering practice, having been involved with projects in essentially every corner of Canada, and in the U.S. Costa Rica, Ghana, Nepal, Indonesia and other countries.

Several of the dams he has helped to design and construct are among the highest, and/or largest in the world.  One of his first, the Lower Notch Dam, is also considered by ICOLD to be among the 10 most difficult dam foundations in the world.

Perhaps Mr. Tawil is best known now for his interest in ensuring the safety of dams.  He was among the first proponents of dam safety practice in Canada.  He has served as President of the Canadian Dam Safety and subsequently the Canadian Dam Association.  He has strongly influenced and helped to author the Guidelines for Dam Safety in Canada, and this document now serves as a model for the developing standards of other countries.  He has already received the Canadian Dam Safety (Inge Anderson) Award.  Mr. Tawil is a distinguished consultant and expert in dams.  He serves as a member of project review panels and on international Consulting Boards.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I ask that you acknowledge one of Canada’s top civil engineers, and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Mr. President – Mr. Anthony H. Tawil
