Saatcioglu

Dr. Murat Saatcioglu – nominated by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering

Murat Saatcioglu graduated from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and then was granted a Masters in Structural Engineering at Toronto and a PhD in the same specialty from Northwestern University in the US. After some time with the Portland Cement Association, in both the US and Canada, he joined the University of Ottawa, where is now a Professor and Chair in the Department of Civil Engineering. He is also Director of the Carleton Earthquake Centre and President of the Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering.

Professor Saatcioglu’s contributions are in teaching, research and service to his profession. His excellence in teaching is demonstrated by the reception of prestigious awards received from his university, the Province of Ontario, and from professional and learned societies. Not only do students benefit from his teaching but he has been a CSCE National Lecturer and for the American Concrete Institute since 1992.

His research accomplishments have been recognized by the University of Ottawa, in his appointment as the only professor of the Faculty of Engineering to hold to a university Research Chair. His research is in smart structures and advanced composite material, a merging of the fields of information technology and civil engineering.

The number of his graduate students and his many awards testify to the volume and quality of his research. He has 9 Ph.D. and 3 Masters students currently under study and PhD and 76 Masters students that have completed to date.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we present an engineer who has distinguished himself in all aspects of his academic career, one of Canada's finest teachers. And now, Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada
