EIC FELLOW  (2005)

Petriu

Dr. Dorina Petriu– nominated by the IEEE Canada

Dorina Petriu graduated in computer engineering at the Polytechnic University of Timisoara in Romania. She was subsequently granted a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University. Her early career was spent at the Polytechnic University in Timisoara then in the University of Oran, Algeria, and the University of Quebec before joining Carleton, where she is currently Professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering.

Dr. Petriu is one of Canada’s leading software engineers working on software modeling and performance evaluation, a field of great importance for the computer, software, telecommunication and other industries using real-time embedded systems. She made early contributions to pattern-based software performance modeling and measurements, and developed new analytical and simulation tools for performance analysis.. She is most known, however, for pioneering contributions in bridging the gap between performance analysis and the Unifies Modeling Language (UML), which is a standard for software specification and design. She is a contributor to the standard UML Profile for Schedulability, Performance and Time, which has been adopted by the Object Management Group in 2002. She has been recognized by her peers as a leader in automatic transformations of UML design specifications into performance models. Other research contributions are in software development for robotics and virtual environments. In a multi-disciplinary team working on world modeling and visualization/animation of physical objects, Dr. Petriu is the only researcher for object-oriented software development, UML modeling. Dr. Petriu is regularly invited to lecture or collaborate with researchers in the growing field of software performance engineering, in France, Italy, Ireland, and the US. She is generous with her time, especially with IEEE where she has twice been recognized as Executive of the Year for the section, and separately for outstanding contributions to IEEE. She has published extensively and has trained an impressive contingent of future software engineers. Currently she is supervising 5 Masters students and 5 PhD students, and serves as External Examiner for a number of foreign universities.

For this talented and creative engineer, committed to developing the growing field of software engineering, the EIC awards the honour of Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Ladies and gentlemen and Madam President – Dr. Dorina Petriu
