Mouftah

Professor Hussein Mouftah- nominated by IEEE Canada

Hussein Mouftah earned his PhD from LavalUniversity He is currently a Professor in the School of Information Technology at the University of Ottawa where he also holds the Canada Research Chair in Optical Networks. From his first steps as a researcher at Laval he has made many contributions in Multi-Value Logic, one of the fields that has enabled the evolution of modern digital computer technology and microelectronics. Subsequently he entered the field of computer-communication networks where he has built his reputation as a world-class researcher.

After a number of years in the telecommunication industry, mostly with BNR/NORTEL he joined Queen's university, remaining there until he joined the University of Ottawa in 2002 to take up his Canada Research Chair. He has maintained close links with BNR/NOREL through his 3 sabbatical years, and has significantly contributed to product development. He has also contributed to Canadian telecommunications by the engagement of most of his 110 graduate students and counting. Dr. Mouftah’s research productivity is quite outstanding: 5 books and 18 book chapters, 8 patents, 114 refereed journal papers, 420 refereed conference papers, and 130 non-referred paper. With his extensive grants he currently supervises 28 graduate students and 4 post-doctoral fellows.

Dr. Mouftah’s peers in the international research community elected him to the Board of Governors of IEEE. He is currently Chair of the Awards Committee and the Optical Networking Technical Committee, and a distinguished speaker of the IEEE Communication Society. He was the first Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Communications Magazine appointed from outside the US, and similarly Director of Magazines for the society. He has been the General Chair and/or Technical Program Chair of more than 25 national and international networks and information systems.

For all his outstanding contributions to IEEE the largest learned society in engineering with more than 350,000 members, and for his excellence as one of Canada’s premiere researchers, the EIC awards the honour of Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada
