Mr. Peter Lighthall– nominated by the Canadian Geotechnical Society

Peter Lighthall graduated from the University< of British Columbia in civil engineering. Following a few years of practice he returned to university to obtain a Diploma from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, and a Masters degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of London . He is currently Vice President of Mining and senior Geotechnical Consultant at AMEC Earth and Environmental in Vancouver

The initial part of his practicing career was with klohn Leonoff and Klohn-Crippen involved with both geotechnical mining engineering, with perhaps a bias to mining, as he became Director of Mining Projects. He then joined AMEC as Vice President of Mining, with a career focus in this field. He is now one of Canada's most experienced and well-known geotechnical engineers found within the mining industry. His principal expertise lies with the design, construction, operation and closure of tailings and mine waste management system; and in environmental management for mining projects. He has worked through out Canada and North America, and extensively in Latin America, Eastern and Western Europe, in Russia and the former Soviet Republics, China, the Middle east, Australia and Papua New Guinea—not leaving much of the world that has not seen his footprints.

Mr. Lighthall has experience on over one hundred tailings disposal systems for mining projects worldwide. This included site selection, investigation, design construction management, and on going consulting during operations. He has led multi-disciplinary teams on a number of the world’s largest tailings disposal systems. He appears to be in fact the “Team Leader of Choice” when the major mining companies of the world are facing the need for optimization of design, or for handling and/or fixing problems, on what are immense projects by any engineering standard. And where the protection of the environment, both land and ocean, is an absolute must. Mr. Lighthall maintains a strong interest in the activities of professional societies and in technical contributions to both CGS and CIM. He has been an Adjunct lecturer at UBC.

Ladies and gentlemen – one of Canada's most prolific, traveled and in-demand engineers. Now a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada<

Madam President – - Mr. Peter Lighthall
