Mr. Don Lewycky – nominated by the Canadian Geotechnical Society.

Don Lewycky obtained his Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta, then undertook studies in the discipline of geology to set the background for his career in geotechnical engineering. He is currently the Director of Engineering Services for the City of Edmonton. An excellent career choice for Mr. Lewycky, as Edmonton has been blessed, or some might say cursed, with some of the most difficult geotechnical problems of any major city in Canada. This is principally due to the deeply incised valley of the North Saskatchewan River, and its tributary ravines as it winds through the city. Landslides in the glacial soils and soft rock that comprise the slopes are a principal problem in the ongoing struggle between developers and regulators, along with the need for additional road, bridges and tunnels for the expanding rapid transit system. He is often the primary media contact for the City of Edmonton when geotechnical problems occur and provides a calm and collected air or a consummate that might otherwise cause alarm with the general public.

To help Mr. Lewycky deal with these issues, he interacts with a large corps of private and public engineers and technologists. Edmonton is home to several very capable geotechnical engineering consulting companies, new yearly river in a pristine state, but also keeps the residents of Edmonton safe in their workplaces, homes and when using the City’s transportation system.

As you might expect, the CGS and its Edmonton chapter (GSE) is an important aspect of Edmonton’s engineering community. Mr. Lewycky has been a strong advocate of the Society, and has served continuously on the GSE executive for most of his career. He is the current president for a second time, but has served in virtually every executive function. He is also the GSE’s unofficial historian. Many Society activities trace back to his initiatives such as; GSE sponsored bursaries for U of A and the Northern Institute of Technology, the annual GSE symposium, field tours and joint presentations with CSCE.

Mr. Lewycky has chaired two national conferences, including the 51st CGS National Conference and the 3rd Canadian Conference on Geotechnique and Natural Hazards. He also served as the CGS Regional Director for Northern Alberta, Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Can there be a more worthy recipient of the CPR Medal, which was struck to honour these who provide leadership at the Regional Branch and Section level of constituent societies? The short answer is no. Ladies and gentlemen the recipient of the CPR Medal for distinguished service.

Madam President – Mr. Don Lewycky
