Atkinson

Mr. Charles Atkinson - nominated by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering

Charles Atkinson graduated from the Durham University in England in Civil Engineering. His early work concentrated on the design and construction of hydroelectric and water supply projects in England and Scotland. He then came to Canada and continued his civil career in highway developments prior to joining Alcan, and then Acres, where he began his more specialized career in hydraulic and hydro technical engineering. He is now on of Canada’s most highly qualified and experienced civil engineer combining hydrologic, hydraulic, hydro technical and environmental engineering for a broad array of national and international projects, among which included some of the largest and most challenging water resource and hydroelectric project in the works.

Among such projects are included Churchill Falls and other proposed hydro plants on the Churchill river system in Labrador; projects in a number of the provinces and northern territories of Canada; Salto Grande and Alto Anchicaya in South America; the Karun hydroelectric project in Iran; and hydroelectric water resource projects through out Asia and far east Asia; projects such as the Kpong hydro project in Ghana, and others in Africa. With such projects Mr. Atkinson has always pioneered developments having regard for the human and environmental side of engineering. Such allied activities include, for example, environmental review for matters of public health and safety impacts in Ghana, transmigration in East Kalimantan, rural water supply and sanitation in Pakistan, and evaluation of the environmental p aspects of numerous hydroelectric projects. It is this broad sweep of public care and duty that has worked the career of Charles Atkinson as one of Canada’s premiere civil engineers. Among the honours received in a rich career, he has been awarded the Thomas Keeler Gold Medal and Camille Dagenais Award of the CSCE. He is a Fellow of the CSCE and tonight the Engineering Institute honors him in a similar fashion.

Madam President, as Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada - Mr. Charles H. Atkinson.
